How to Join Nigerian Customs Service

This article is for those interested to join Nigerian Customs Service, so that they can be enlightened on what the Customs Service will be requiring of them should they decide to pursue their dream. The Nigerian Customs Service is an independent agency under the supervisory oversight of the Nigerian Ministry of Finance, responsible for the collection of customs revenue and anti-smuggling efforts.

As at the time of writing this article, the minimum academic qualifications that interested applicants will need to have to be considered eligible to apply whenever the Customs Service are recruiting is either SSCE, NECO, GCE, NCE, ND, HND, or BSC, depending on the particular cadre they will be applying for.

For those that will be applying as man (SUPERINTENDENT CADRE) and women SUPERINTENDENT CADRE) must be aged between 18 and 28 years of age as at the time they applied, and must possess either SSCE, NECO, GCE, ND, HND, BSC or any other relevant certificates from reputable and approved government institutions and universities.

Academic Qualifications to Join Nigerian Customs Service

There are different cadres and categories of positions in the Nigerian Customs Service, and these positions can be applied for directly if there exists a vacancy, and if you possess the necessary qualifications that each of the cadres/categories require.

Whenever there is any vacancy in any of the different cadres/categories, these positions are advertised so that interested persons can apply, then those that are shortlisted will take their recruitment test or aptitude test as the case may be.

Those who pass the recruitment test will then be invited for an interview. After posing through the entire recruitment process, those that scale through will then be called to undertake the necessary training those positions they applied for requires, that is after they have been employed.

As already stated above, whenever the Nigerian Customs Service commences their recruitment process, and advertises the available positions needed in the different cadres/categories, these cadres/categories usually have academic qualifications attached to them. The academic requirements for the respective cadres are listed out below:

Join Nigerian Customs Service – SUPERINTENDENT CADRE:

Post: Assistant Superintendent of Customs Grade II (Consol 08)

• For this post interested applicants must possess a Bachelors Degree with at least Second Class Lower Division from a recognized/approved Nigerian University.

Join Nigerian Customs Service – INSPECTOR CADRE

Post (i). Inspector of Customs (Consol 07)

• Interested applicants must have a Higher National Diploma (HND) with at least lower credit from a recognized Polytechnic.

(ii). Assistant Inspector of Customs (Consol 06)

• Interested applicants must possess a National Diploma (ND) with at least lower credit from a recognized Polytechnic.

Join Nigerian Customs Service – ASSISTANT CADRE

Post (i). Customs Assistant II (Consol 04)

• Interested applicants must have Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASC/NECO) with Credits in not less than five subjects including English Language and Mathematics obtained at a maximum of two sittings.
• A General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level with credit in five subjects including English Language and Mathematics obtained at a maximum of two sittings is also acceptable.

(ii). Customs Assistant III (Consol 03)

• Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASC/NECO) with Credits in not less than four subjects including English Language and Mathematics obtained at a maximum of two sittings; and a General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level with credit in four subjects including English Language and Mathematics obtained at a maximum of two sittings will be required of applicants.

General Requirements/Qualifications to Join Nigerian Customs Service

Apart from academic qualifications, there are other necessary requirements and qualifications that interested applicants need to possess to be considered eligible to apply for entrance into the Nigerian Customs Service includes the following:

• For all the available positions in the different cadres/categories qualified male applicants must not be less than 1 .7 metres tall while female applicants must not be less than 1.65 metres tall.
• All males must have a fully expanded chest measurement of not less than 0.87 metres.
• Also all interested applicants must be Nigerian citizens, and you will be required to present a valid national identity card or a voter’s card. Without a valid ID card you may not be able to partake in the final selection of the Custom Service recruitment process.
• All interested persons must be certified by a Government Medical Officer to be physically and mentally fit for appointment.
• Interested applicants must not be suffering from any form of physical or mental disability.
• All HND and Degree holders are expected to have NYSC discharge certificate.
• All applicants must be free from any form of financial embarrassment.
• Interested candidates must be of good character and must not have been found guilty of any criminal offence.
• Interested applicants must be Computer literate.
• All interested candidates must be between the ages of 18 – 25 for CONSOL 3, CONSOL4, CONSOL6; and between the ages of 18 – 28 for CONSOL7 and CONSOL8.
• All female candidates must be single.
• All applicants must have a Certificate of State of Origin signed by the Chairman or Secretary of their Local Governments.
• Certificates endorsed by Liaison offices are not acceptable.

How to Join Nigerian Customs Service

If you meet all the above mentioned qualifications and requirements then you can apply on the Nigeria Customs website www.customs.gov.ng, on the home page click on “About Us” link, then click the “Vacancies” link.  You will be presented with an application form that you will need to fill online and submit to complete the application process.

After applying successfully, you will receive acknowledgment either by e-mail or text, containing a reference number which must be quoted in all future correspondence.

All interested applicants must note that access to the website and application is free of charge.
No paper application will be accepted.

Applicants are to submit only one application because multiple application leads to automatic disqualification.
The Nigeria Customs Service has also stated clearly that it will not be responsible for any application that is done/submitted on any other website outside the official Nigerian Customs Service website that is stated above.
